Caring

We all need extra care sometimes on our journey through life. Members of the Caring Committee team provide on going one-on-one relationship with UUCM members and friends during times of special need: major life changes, transition, isolation, loss and mourning, and other challenges life sometimes hands us. Caring Committee members do not function as professionals, and do not offer crisis intervention or counseling, but rather serve as safe friends who will keep confidences and who will walk beside us through our ups and downs.

With the direction and assistance of our minister, Caring Committee members offer regular contact, a caring presence, empathy and emotional support, connection with resources of the Caring Network, and guidance to other available sources of help as needed. Our Caring Network connects members in need with others who are glad to lend helping hands. Members and Friends of UUCM are invited to offer their services on call. These services include: Home or hospital visits, Transportation to an appointment, A ride to UUCM on Sunday, Friendly visiting by phone, Preparing and/or delivering a meal, and Essential errands for members & friends who are unable to leave home.

Please contact us if you have a need we can help you with, or if you would like to bring the needs of another member or friend of UUCM to our attention. We would also like to hear from you if you can assist us in offering help to others, or if you would like to become more involved. Please contact us at caringcommittee@uugrassvalley.org

The UUCM Caring Committee meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 5:30pm.

Spiritual Book Group

The Spiritual Book Group meets the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon at the UUCM. We discuss books covering a very wide range of topics. Some of the books we have read include Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment by Tal Ben-Shohar, Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life by Richard Rohr, If You’re Lucky Your Heart Will Break: Field Notes on a Zen Life by James Ishmael Ford, The Soul of Money: Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Life by Lynne Twist, and Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith by Anne Lamott… For information about current selections, contact Scottie Hart, 530/272-5022.

Writing Group

Encouragement, support, consistent deadlines, criticism — this is what the Writer’s Group provides. Members bring their own writings to share with others and receive feedback. This group has been in existence for nine years. Writers attending produce a wide range of work, including poetry, mysteries, children’s stories, essays, and memoirs. The Writer’s Group often presents a worship service during the year and has published several magazines and presented a short original fiction piece entitled “Naked Came the Unitarian” at a coffee house.

Meetings consist of attendees bringing several copies of their current work and presenting those writings for supportive comment and criticism. Two members have gone on to attend the VCU MFA program in poetry. And several members have had their writings published or won awards for their writings in contests.

The group meets the 2nd and 4th Mondays at 7:00 at the church. You don’t have to bring something to read to attend.

Meditation Group

We meet for silent meditation on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. at the UUCM; we are through by 10 a.m. If you practice any form of silent meditation, you are welcome. Although most of us sit on chairs, some folks bring mats and sit on the floor. This is an essentially leaderless practice group, not a class, but we are happy to encourage rookies. For more information, contact Scottie Hart, 530/272-5022.
