The Tao Te Ching counsels that “A journey of a thousand miles starts beneath one’s feet.” The very first step of so many of our journeys is not a physical step, but rather new movement along an inner path. The labyrinth is a powerful metaphor for such a journey, reminding us that we may need to go inward in order to find our way outward, and that traveling a close, winding path may allow us to discover in our hearts, not merely in our heads, that the wisdom sayers were correct – the journey is indeed the destination.
