2022 Renewal Leave Announcement

We write to inform you, well in advance, of the dates for Rev. Kevin’s renewal
leave (sabbatical) which will be divided between the fall of 2022 and the spring
of 2023.

By next fall Rev. Kevin will have accrued six months of renewal leave (sabbatical), one month for each year of service. With the Board’s approval, he has chosen to divide that important time into two segments, six weeks in October/November 2022, and 4.5 months between February 1 and June 30, 2023. Such leave is used by ministers for spiritual renewal, study, writing, meditation, and other forms of professional and religious growth.

Democracy Today: A Faith Call for Justice and Democracy

Join Side With Love, UU the Vote, and the Unitarian Universalist Association for a faith-grounded discussion and call to action for democracy. Engage with theologians, organizers, and activists doing the work of racial and electoral justice.

Today we are witnessing a dangerous swelling in anti-democratic measures across the country. Nearly every state in the nation faces voter suppression bills, states and cities are criminalizing protest, and our immigration and criminal legal systems continue to keep us from the promise of a truly democratic nation. Right now, across the country, the people are rising up to demand democracy, organize their communities and leverage their collective power to move lawmakers and corporations to make change.

Last week, the CEOs of Delta and Coca-Cola listened to the communities calling for them to show up for Black voters in Georgia and condemn the anti-democracy bill, SB 202. We win when we work in solidarity. Now is the time to harness the power of love to build alongside frontline communities and to dismantle all the systems that keep us from fully embodying our inherent worth and dignity. Democracy cannot wait!

Join Democracy Today: A Faith Call for Justice and Democracy on Wednesday, April 14 7-8:30 pm ET / 6-7:30pm CT / 5-6:30pm MT / 4-5:30pm PT

On April 14, engage with theologians, organizers, and activists doing the work of racial and electoral justice. We must grapple with the white supremacist and capitalist agenda that seeks to dominate our society and threaten the lives and dignity of BIPOC, disabled, poor and other marginalized communities. Unitarian Universalism offers us the moral courage and prophetic possibilities for a just, loving and democratic society.

The panel discussion will be followed by a workshop for mass action across our UU community. Learn how you and your congregation can join in the urgent work of building a democractic society.

The Earth is now experiencing human-caused climate disruption at an ever-accelerating pace. At present, even the best case mitigation strategies will not stave off catastrophic changes that are already heated into the biosphere. How, then, shall we Live? The talk will give a brief overview of how far along we are with climate disruption, then shift into spending the majority of time addressing how we find meaning, and purpose, during such a time.  For more info, go to our webinar page.

Sign of the Times – Get Yours!

Your UUCM Carbon Dividend Task Force, in conjunction with the local chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, has a new initiative. We have been seeking ways to demonstrate support for climate change mitigation that is compatible with avoiding the virus.

Here is your opportunity. We want to populate the yards of Grass Valley and Nevada City with yard signs as shown above. We have the signs. Please place a sign in your yard. You can do this for a week or two and then pass it on to a friend or you can keep it there until we have made real progress.

If you really love the planet then get 3 signs. Place one in your yard and ask two friends to put them in their yards and encourage them to get two more. This is called going viral. It works for you-know-what so why not for CCL yard signs?

We are paying about $13 for each sign. If you want to contribute that is great but we are happy to make the signs available at no cost to you. We deliver. There are a few available for pick up at UUCM.

We are collecting photos of signs in people’s yards with or without the owner.
